However, accurately simulating these processes can be computationally expensive, particularly when accounting for the complex interactions between nanoparticles of different shapes and orientations.

In this study, we combined analytical van der Waals interaction potentials with Monte Carlo simulations to model nanoparticle self-assembly more efficiently. By incorporating virtual cluster moves, our framework captures collective particle motion and overcomes important sampling limitations.

Our results demonstrate that this approach can reproduce realistic assembly structures while achieving computational speeds orders of magnitude faster than conventional atomistic and coarse-grained simulations.

We also investigated how interparticle attractions influence the structural ordering of faceted nanoparticles, providing insights into the roles of energetic and entropic effects during self-assembly.

Why It Matters

This research contributes to the development of faster and more accurate computational tools for understanding and predicting nanoscale material behavior. Such methods can help accelerate the exploration and design of self-assembling nanomaterials while reducing computational costs.

I am grateful to my coauthors, Şafak Çallıoğlu, Yuanchuan Shao, Brian H. Lee, and Gaurav Arya, for their contributions and collaboration.

Publication Details

Title: Efficient Monte Carlo Simulation of Faceted Nanoparticles Using Analytical Interaction Potentials

Authors: Şafak Çallıoğlu, Quanpeng Yang, Yuanchuan Shao, Brian H.
